I have been writing on product management and how to build good products. But I have never talked about bad or unsuccessful products. This ends today with this story. In this story, I would go through some of the worst tech product failures that industry has seen.

  1. Google Glass: Google’s attempt at creating a wearable device that would allow users to access information and interact with the internet through voice commands and a small heads-up display. The product was criticized for its high cost, poor battery life, and privacy concerns. It was also seen as cumbersome and socially awkward to wear in public.
    What actually Happened?
    Google Glass was a wearable device developed by Google that was equipped with a small heads-up display, a camera, and voice commands. The device was designed to allow users to access information and interact with the internet in a hands-free manner. Google Glass was first announced in 2012 and was made available to a small group of “Explorers” through a beta program in 2013. However, the device was met with a number of criticisms and was ultimately discontinued in 2015.One of the main criticisms of Google Glass was its high cost. At $1,500, the device was considered too expensive for most consumers. Additionally, the device had poor battery life and required frequent charging.
    Google Glass also faced privacy concerns due to the device’s camera, which could be used to surreptitiously record or take photographs of people without their knowledge or consent. This led to a number of establishments, such as bars, movie theaters, and casinos, to ban the device.
    Overall, Google Glass failed to gain mainstream acceptance and was discontinued in 2015, although the technology behind it has been used in other products like enterprise and industrial applications.
  2. Amazon Fire Phone: Amazon’s first foray into the smartphone market was a failure due to its high price, lack of apps, and poor hardware. The phone’s unique features, such as dynamic perspective and Firefly, were not enough to attract consumers.
